I think this has been asked before, but I just want to be clear on the following answers.

Is the annular ring dimension defined as the difference between the outer and inner radii of the pad?

What is the minimum annular ring size for pads around holes? Is this dimension different for double-sided and 4-layer boards?

On all plated-through holes, is it required to have a pad on a copper layer which meets the minimum annular ring specification, even if there is no connection to the via on a layer?

I saw in a earlier post that the clearance between vias and power planes requires a 20 mil anti-pad annulus. Is this true, and does it apply to double-sided and 4-layer boards? If true, this could remove lots of power/ground plane material, especially on 4-layer boards where the line/space dimensions are so small (6 mil/6 mil).

Hi Paul,

Thank for your interest in the PCB-POOL(R).
We will awnser your questions all together with this mail.
Annular Ring
The annular ring is the difference between the outer and inner radii of the pad.
The minimum Annular ring for double sided in PCB-POOL(R) is 8mil and for multi layers this is 6mil.
PTH no connection
If you desire a plated through hole you should provide a good sized annular ring, to allow for the copper to build up in the hole.
Anything smaller than the minimum size will not guarantee good plating. Its up to yourself if you just want a connection, between the layers (not necessarily a via) a 4mil annular ring should give you a light connection.
Anti-pads
Yes in PCB-POOL(R) we give the minimun sizes because we know that these can be manufactured efficiently and without big problems. Should you require a smaller anti-pad then we can provide a quote for you from our NON-POOL division.
Hole size
Yes, you provide us with a drill size and that is what you get. No, the Hole diametre is not decreased as we increase the drills in pre-production. We do this to a value of 0.15mm-0.2mm. This compensates for the copper deposit in the hole and also with a good annular ring size, we are guaranteed top quality PTH and vias. Plus the customer gets exactly what he wants. There is no difference here with double sided and multi layer boards.
Material
In PCB-POOL(R) all material is the same.
Double sided
FR4 Standard epoxy material
1.6mm Thickness of Material
35ľm (1.oz) Copper on either side (35/35) or (1/1)
ML4
FR4 Standard epoxy material
1.6mm Thickness of Material
18ľm (0.5.oz) Copper on either side (18/18)
35ľm (1.oz) Copper on the inner layers (35/35)

Any variation we will furnish you with a qoute from our NON- POOL division.
V.A.T
Value Added Tax is not charged to non European customers. You must however pay your own local customs/importation taxes.
This is normally a nominal sum unless you are importing something large.
